Culmination Brewing - American Otter Beer Label​

 

For this freelance project for Culmination Brewing in Portland, Oregon, I designed a beer label for their American Otter Pale Ale. The concept centered around the otter as a playful, approachable, and Pacific Northwest-inspired symbol—capturing the spirit of the beer and the laid-back yet intentional ethos of the brand.

At the core of this label is a custom hand-drawn illustration of an otter. My goal was to craft an expressive, character-rich illustration that felt both organic and contemporary. I focused on capturing the otter's personality—curious, confident, and distinctly animated—while ensuring the form worked well on packaging.

The line work balances detail with bold simplicity, giving the illustration both shelf appeal and brand recognition. While the otter is the visual focal point, I designed the label within Culmination’s brand guidelines—carefully aligning with their typography standards, logo usage, and overall visual tone. The color palette complements both the illustration and the existing product line, creating harmony across their portfolio while allowing American Otter to stand out with its own identity.

This project is a strong example of how I use illustration and graphic design to create packaging that’s not only eye-catching and unique, but also strategically aligned with brand positioning and audience appeal.
